A 6.3 magnitude earthquake has struck the Greek island of Crete.

It comes just two weeks after another quake on the island killed a man and damaged hundreds of building.

There were no immediate reports of damage or injury.

‘The quake was felt all over the island, and it did cause concern because we are still feeling the aftershocks from the previous quake,’ Crete’s deputy regional governor, Yiannis Leondarakis, told Greece’s state-run radio.

He continued: ‘Fortunately, there does not appear to be any serious damage despite the fact that it was a strong event and occurred at a shallow depth.’

Magnitude 4.1 and 4.5 quakes that are believed to be aftershocks took place minutes later, the Geodynamic Institute said.

Hundreds of people from villages south of the island’s largest city, Heraklion, remain homeless following the previous 6.0 quake that struck on September 27.

The institute in Athens said Tuesday afternoon’s quake had a preliminary magnitude of 6.3 and occurred under the sea off the eastern coast of the island.

That makes it closer to the surface than the quake late last month and slightly stronger – though provisional reading then had registered it as more ferocious than it later turned out to be.

The latest incident’s epicentre was 23 km east of the village of Zakros and had a shallow depth of just 2 km, the organisation said.

The fire brigade had not received any immediate calls for help following the 12.24pm incident, a police official said.

Local media said it was felt on Crete and on the Dodecanese islands in the Aegean Sea, including Rhodes.

Greece is located on a number of fault lines, and is sporadically hit by earthquakes.

A Greek seismologist said that Tuesday’s quake came from a different fault line to the incident on September 27, which also injured ten people.
