A call has gone to the new Commissioner of Police in Ogun State, Lanre Bankole not to allow himself to be used by the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) to torment opposition parties in the State.
The Ogun State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and the Labour Party (LP) made this charge in separate interviews with VELOXNEWS in Abeokuta as they welcomed the new CP to the Gateway State.
Speaking with our correspondent, the PDP State Publicity Secretary, Akinloye Bankole, charged the new Police Commissioner not to become a willing tool in the hands of Governor Dapo Abiodun and his ruling APC.
“I must tell the new CP that we are gradually gravitating towards the period of electioneering in Ogun State. 2022 is the year that precedes the 2023 general elections. Gradually, the politics is heating up and we expect him to display a high sense of duty in making sure he does not reduce the office of the Commissioner of Police to a willing tool in the hand of Mr Governor to torment the opposition parties and other members of the public. We expect that he is not going to diminish the essence and significance of that office.
“We understand the the sinking APC government in Ogun State understands the fact that they are losing it and they are prepared to clinch to any available straw to prevent the wrecking ship from drowning.
“The new CP should ensure non-partisanship in politics. The book of history is wide open. He should be properly guided and he should deliver good quality service to the people of Ogun State in terms of security of lives and property,” the PDP spokesperson advised.
Likewise, the State Chairman of the Labour Party, Abayomi Arabambi asked the new CP to ensure “that the Police does not remain the security arm of the ruling political party against the current opposition political parties in Ogun State.”
Arabambi wished the new police boss would make the desired positive difference and visible remarkable performance in Ogun, asking him to be receptive of new ideas from stakeholders.
In his advice, Arabambi suggested that: “All divisions in the State should be effectively and efficiently put on your immediate direct monitoring.
“A far much greater attention must be given to the official attitude of officers and men especially in the area of receiving and attending to complainants at the desk or on the phone. Traces of friendliness must be found always.
“A very honest and sincere effort must be made to encourage the public to feel safe in informing the police on the various black spots in their area of operations. It is a well known fact that criminals live with and are known to the people. But many are scared off by the fear that the police usually expose the identity of such informants to the criminals.
“Criminals are not ghosts; they are citizens living among the people, they have friends, families and they have neighbours. My opinion is that a neighbourhood and an environment of improved security can be achieved when the police have sources of information that feel safe and truly secure. I am very much convinced that security can only be achieved when the police is ready to make the difference.”
Speaking further, the LP Chairman charged CP Bankole to painstakingly identify a team of just two or three senior fine officers to work with him on receipt of information, telling him to encourage a couple of trustable informants among the people from each police division who would report directly to hiim.
“As soon as such information is received, all the relevant identities of the informant should be reduced to a code – meaning that only the trio of the Commissioner and his two to three fine officers could identify the informant.
“This is a guaranteed way to make a positive difference in the State’s policing. Please create your own trustable line of communication with a view to convincing informants of their protection.
“Further more, this your new tour of duty should ensure that the Police doesn’t remain the security arm of the ruling political party against the current opposition political parties.
“Finally I must let you know that the current Police PRO, Abimbola Oyeyemi, is a man that has established himself as a friend of the law-abiding citizens and leadership of opposition political parties through his uncompromising straightforwardness exemplified by his just doctrine of fairness and equitable participation,” Arabambi stated.
While promising to work with the Commissioner of Police in intelligence gathering, the PDP appealed to him to help fight kidnapping, banditry, armed robbery, cultism and the menace of land grabbing, among others in Ogun State.
