Line of Duty fans have been waiting for updates on a possible series 7 since the identity of H was revealed earlier this year – and now we have a clearer idea than ever before.

The BBC’s head of drama has revealed that the broadcaster is hopeful that the smash hit police procedural will be back, but it won’t be before the pandemic is over and done with.

Speaking about Line of Duty and creator Jed Mercurio’s other hit drama The Bodyguard, Piers Wenger told the Sun: ‘Of course, we’re all massive fans of the show – we’d like to see both of them return.’

But there’s no guarantee that we’ll get more action from inside AC-12 at this point, as Jed has yet to make concrete plans for new episodes.

‘Jed is thinking [about it] but I can’t really say much more than that. He hasn’t committed to writing either of them,’ Piers continued.

He added: ‘I think if he were to do them he’d like to do it when Covid wasn’t a thing because [the Line of Duty’ production was particularly impacted in the making of series six.’

Line of Duty has followed the actions of AC12 over the last 10 years, with Martin Compston, Vicky McClure and Adrian Dunbar becoming the nation’s favourite detective trio.

Martin, who plays DI Compston, recently told the Daily Star that creator Jed will only return to the show for the right reasons.

‘People want us to come back and that’s amazing. But Jed will only come back and do more if he believes there is a story to tell.

‘He won’t come back just because we’re getting bigger. He wouldn’t do another series just for the sake of it. He writes everything for a reason.’

Line of Duty is ready to stream on BBC iPlayer.
