In 1991, ITV had huge success with the first series of The Darling Buds of May, an adaptation of the 1958 H.E. Bates novel it expanded into further books and two further series.
Set in 1950s rural Kent and following the life of the Larkins, the original series starred Sir David Jason and Pam Ferris, and launched then unknown Catherine Zeta-Jones to stardom.
Now the channel is hoping to replicate that success again with a reboot of the popular series, this time called The Larkins, and adapted by Simon Nye (The Durrells, Finding Alice).
Who is in The Larkins’ cast?
The cast of The Larkins is led by The Chase host Bradley Walsh as Pop Larkin, the role initially played by Sir David. Pop is a bit of a wheeler-dealer, but one with a heart of gold who always puts his family first and is life and soul of the party. Bradley previously starred in Coronation Street and Doctor Who.
Joanna Scanlan stars as Ma Larkin, Pop’s loving wife and a caring mother to their six children. Originally played by Pam Ferris, Joanna is known for her roles in The Thick of It, Getting On and Dracula. Ma, alongside the other Larkins, is fiercely loyal to her family and local community in the idyllic Garden of England – and will call out any snobbery or bullying she witnesses.
Sabrina Bartlett is Mariette Larkin, taking on the part that made Catherine-Zeta Jones famous. As the family’s beautiful daughter, the Bridgerton star will have two men vying for her romantic attentions, although Mariette might be looking for something other than married life as she dreams of travelling to Paris.
Tok Stephen is Cedric ‘Charley’ Charlton, a tax inspection worker who stays with the Larkins and falls head over heels for Mariette. Attempts to look older and act seriously, and is ready to fend off his competition. Tok has previously been in Silent Witness and Grantchester.
Stephen Hagan features as Tom Fisher, the handsome newcomer who has also taken a liking to Mariette. The smooth charmer is progressive and has ideas for developing the village, which include offering Mariette a job. Stephen starred opposite James Nesbitt in Lucky Man and appeared in TV series Medici.
Lydia Page has been cast as Primrose Larkin, another Larkin offspring who idolises her big sister Mariette. Intelligent and self-conscious, she harbours a crush on fairground worker Eddie. Lydia is best known for playing Mildred Hubble in the recent remake TV series of The Worst Witch.
The cast also includes Natalie Mitson as Pauline, Mariette’s friend-turned-rival, Robert Bathurst as local celebrity and vain actor Johnny Delamere, Tony Gardner as Pop’s prissy rival Alec Norman, Selina Griffiths as Norma Norman, Amelia Bullmore as lonely village committee member Edith Pilchester, Kriss Dosanjh as Brigadier, Seeta Indrani as the Brigadier’s sister Miss Chand, and former Doctor Who Peter Davison as the foul-mouthed village vicar.
Bradley’s son Barney Walsh will also pop up as policeman PC Harness.
